When you want to swim underwater, you need to take the scuba gear with you to stay under for a longer time. The mixture of nitrogen with oxygen will help you breathe underwater, and your lungs will not feel that your whole body is immersed in water and you are breathing through a gas tank. The scuba tank will extend your underwater treading time to an hour or two, depending on the size of the canisters you have brought with you. But without these gas tanks and oxygen mixture, it is difficult for mammals to survive underwater for more than a minute.

Snorkels help us extend our deepwater time to explore aquatic life more at the clear sea. According to some experts, elephants have their snorkel, which they got overtime when they had to make frequent trips in the water bodies in search of new grassy fields. The use of snorkel is easy for them, but not all mammals are awarded this natural trunk to enjoy underwater trips for an extended distance. Mammals cannot stay underwater for more than a few minutes, and they have to come to the surface to breathe even if their body resembles the fish. Dolphin has got all the advantages from the evolutionary process, but their underwater stays are still limited. Can Cows Swim Underwater?

Cows do not find it easy to submerge their body underwater. Even if they do so, they cannot hold their breath for a longer time. They do not have trunks or natural snorkels as elephants do. Cows are not adapted to staying underwater for some extended time as their eating habits and body needs force them to stay on land to get all the nutrition from fresh grass and plants. They need ample water to drink and survive, but that doesn’t mean they have to learn to swim underwater to reach the coveted water. Can Cows Swim?

Cows can swim easily for more than 100 meters, evident from the cows living in ranches on Iceland. Some ranch owners have to lead their cows to the other side through the river. They do this practice twice a year because of the extreme weather and different conditions on both sides of the river. One side produces greener grass in winter while the other does in summer. The farmers hush their cows in the flowing river and take them to the other side. These mammals keep their heads afloat, and with the help of naturally floating bodies and slender legs, they swim to safety on the other side of the bank. Can Cows Swim in Deep Water?

Final Thoughts – How Far Can Cows Swim Underwater?

But when you ask about their swimming distance underwater, things are not that promising. For a cow, it is almost impossible to stay underwater, dead or alive. Their body is made so that they cannot stay under the water for more than a minute. If there is mild turbulence in the water and they have to hold their breath for 30 to 40 seconds and go just a few inches underwater, this feat is possible. But more than that is impossible for these land animals as they cannot go for more than a few meters by staying underwater.
