Darlene and I were Houseparents in a Children’s Home in Valparaiso Indiana around 1980. We had our three Girls, plus we had 6 girls in our Foster home. The children’s home was located on a 500 Acre Farm. We created a summer work program for the 53 children in the home during the summer. On the Campus was an old barn, Completely full of trash. We took the children and during that summer – we cleaned out the barn. Painted it Barn Red with Silver roof. We installed fences and Gates, sectioned off some gates, and installed a Chicken Coop inside the Barn. from that summer the Foster Children raised about 200 chickens at a time. We had a Farmer who gave us two sows, so from there we had many piglets. It was such a great experience for children that came from very difficult home lives. We had Chickens, Pigs, Rabbits, Goat, and two Calves.
